Hi Jack – hail doesn’t just damage the softer parts of the vine (fruit and leaves), it can also damage the buds and canes if it is heavy enough – parts that go on to bear next year’s crop.

Lovely article. I love Chenin, particularly from the Loire – it is such a shame that we aren’t going to see much output from Vouvray in 2013 or 2014 due to the horrific weather over the past couple of months. Chinon and Saumur are producing some very attractive and easy drinking dry Chenins.
