I think it is a positive move. It won’t impact on current Cream Sherry and if anything, by definition, will improve the quality of Cream Sherry and encourage fans of such wine to trade up.

It’s image is indeed something in need of attention in the UK. It’s one of the main barriers to people exploring it I think. Maybe this is something the Consejo Regulador can work on…

Sherry is far from becoming a “Collector’s item” though! There is a surging new wave of young wine afficionados who are drastically changing the image of sherry. Watch this space! Salud!!

The (sacrilegious if I may) terms “Oloroso Dulce” and “Sweet Oloroso” were banned on the 30th March 2012 by way of Andalusian Government decree.

Oloroso must henceforth be less than 5 grams/litre of residual sugar. Mind you 5 g/l is still too much IMHO. Zero Dosage Oloroso for me.

Depends how technical you want to get! But yes, that’s accurate. I suppose the difference between a Cream and a Sweet Oloroso is the quality of the base wine and the sweetening agents. I’m quite partial to a Sweet Oloroso now and again – Gonzalez Byass Matusalem or Valdespino Solera 1842 are both lovely. Couldn’t name many good Creams though!

Pale Cream is a sweetened Fino. A Cream is a sweetened Oloroso.

I thought a Sweet Oloroso was a posh description of a Cream Sherry?

IMHO if you do want a sweetened Oloroso, (and I somehow never do) sweeten a bone dry Oloroso yourself with a few drops of your own PX to taste and give it a good shake.
