I couldn't agree more with many of the things you mention on this article. I have seen, and have suffered this disembodyment of the industry in my beloved Spain. And even though some producers are bravely changing that trend and going back to their roots, many foreign varieties are still being planted.
On the other hand, let's not forget that this so called foreign markets are made of people. People who talk, read, write, score, and most importantly drink the stuff. Lots of it. And even if we don't like this mass produced, cheap, soulless wine, for many of this people, it is still just a drink. And, unfortunately, for most will always be.
Cheers,

Hello Matt,
As a winemaker grown up and trained in a traditional European wine region (beautiful Rheingau) and having established my own New World winery in New Zealand 25 years ago,I couldn't agree more with your sentiments. Beautifully said in an almost poetic way it's easy to see why you have achieved so much! It's nice to know there are people who see the art in winemaking more than pure commercialism! Thank you! Edel
